More Robust Domain Management
It seems to me that it is impossibly difficult to manage the multitude of domains I have, either with Rackspace (Click and Name) or with other providers. I took the time to build a mock of what I think would be a great addition to the Rackspace Cloud control panel.
What you will see at http://www.flickr.com/photos/quantumdynamix/4927646962/ are my initial thoughts for the Domain List. This list could be contained within the Hosting tabs due to its direct relation to hosting. On the list screen, various bits of information could be seen at a glance, including the domains expiration date, initial registration date, and site association. A few things within the mock really stand out to me and I would like to discuss further.
These icons give the user a quick reference regarding the general status of the domain. Green would mean the domain is working as expected. Yellow would mean that the domain has a warning associated with it, such as a pending expiration. Red would mean that the domain is not working, either it has expired or its DNS has some kind of issue.
Clicking the site name within the site list would take the user to the area of the control panel where that site can be managed.
The user would click this link to manage the domain. DNS could alternately be managed from here. Renews could be performed from here. I would love to see automatic reoccurring payments occur from within here too!
I thought this was a great feature idea. When the user assigned the domain to a site (which is where all of this domain information would be created from), the user would give it a registrar (if they wanted to). They could select this from a dropdown of common registrars (which would have their management URL pre-assigned to them) or select other and type in the registrar name and management URL. Domains registered through the Rackspace Cloud control panel would simply state that and be managed via the control panel.
So, hopefully this is the most through feature request ever! I hope you enjoy it and I would love to hear your feedback.
If a domain is register via Rackspace then the system NEEDs to allow for complete DNS control. Via the CP or via Click and Name CP.
Example, I should be able to create a MX record for a subdomain, which is SOP with the DNS world.
It's irresponsible and careless not to allow resellers to nominate a credit card for automatic renewal of domain names. This is not a suggestion, it's a critical part of your service!
I would be awesome if you sell domain names for cloudserver and cloudfiles customers from the control panel. Like in my case I will use my servers to host an online store and I will require a domain name for the site, email and the cloudfiles.
Usually the common approach is to go and buy it from Godaddy.com or another domain registrar, but been able to buy the domain from my cloudservers or cloudsites control panel and consolidating the bill will be a great feature.
Please create a more reseller friendly domain registration interface. Provide a central listing of all domains registered via Rackspace and their expiration dates. Allow us to change passwords in the CP without breaking the link to OpenSRS - so domains can be renewed without coming into live chat or creating a ticket. Please take time to educate support about domain registration reselling, and better white label branding of Click and Name emails to our customers.
Cloud DNS domain and record management (now including PTR records) is available in the Cloud Control Panel at mycloud.rackspace.com. Domain registration, outside of Cloud Sites, is not currently available but is something we are considering. Import/export operations are available via Cloud DNS API only right now, but they will eventually be made available via our Cloud Control Panel as well.
The management of DNS for Cloud Sites domains will be better addressed once Cloud Sites can be accessed via mycloud.rackspace.com.
I agree, that will be really useful, I would love to be able to point sub-domains to different email providers.

I will be using another company for all my domain name registrations until this feature is included in the cloud sites service.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it is irresponsible, however I highly recommend you make this addition. Does rackspace have an investment in offering domain registration? (Do you make $ from it?) If so, then why not offer a way to automatically renew domains? I'm sure there is a way to set this up, even if you use a 3rd party client for domain registrations.
Wow Quantum, thanks very much for this super-comprehensive feature request! You've pretty much done the front-end design for them! My comment is a bit of a repost from other planned functionality, but I think even if they don't go to the extent you are suggesting, management of domains you're pointing at hosting environments needs to be more user-friendly, as the API can be frankly baffling sometimes.
Personally I've had nothing but top-notch support from the guys at Rackspace (thanks again chaps) - however when it comes to the Cloud DNS API, there is very little in the way of an idiots guide, if you don't know enough about using XML or JSON to interact.
I'm making the move over from managed hosting environments to save money, and regain some scalability and control over the environments I have to manage, and perhaps even make a foray into more advanced server-side operations. I feel there are a lot of people at my level that could benefit from this, but if you're used to a managed hosting environment, the domain and DNS stuff is a very simple control panel, and having to make the move to understanding the rackspace API would most likely be a deal breaker.
As it is, I'm not going to migrate any live sites onto rackspace until I either understand the API fully or the control panel makes it easier, but it gives me plenty of time to build my ideal severs and run IP-only operations.
Looking forward to seeing complete DNS and domain control in the Cloud Control Panel in the near future.
Is anyone at rackspace able to provide a loose ETA for this in 2012? Q1? Q2?

I would like it if the list of domains could be set to ALWAYS be alphabetical. It is really irritating to search through the list chronologically.
I also would like it if subdomains could be nested under the main domain. Maybe a plus you can click to see what all is being used.
Helpful hint for anyone frustrated with the domain management here... you can get a reseller account at http://opensrs.com/ and have access to a much more reseller friendly domain control panel.
Second, What is the progress on this?!
Any progress on this Rackspace???
Why do DNS settings appear as an item within individual servers? Makes no sense at all!!

going to OpenSRS and go back to Cloud Site control panel is too much, try to do some thing better plz
Glad to see that this status has changed. Any idea when we might actually see something?

To give my 2 cents, I recently ran into a problem with an aliased domain. I have it pointing to another domain and I registered it through the CP. I got a notice saying that the domain was expiring and when I went to renew it through the CP I wasn't able to. No explanation or anything...
HAHA... I just remember that I've already been here!
Please check out my posting at http://feedback.rackspacecloud.com/forums/71021-product-feedback/suggestions/1014623-more-robust-domain-management and please move your votes to there! maybe we'll actually get this to happen!

Strongly agree with this need, and the solution proposed is workable, intuitive and should be really straightforward to deploy. Also, the weirdness with the domain service not updating passwords when a new CloudSites password is generated needs to be fixed. The complexity of managing domains increases dramatically when I try to be safe and use random-style passwords and change them periodically. Pulling together the domain management this way would bring CS essentially top where other hosting services have been for 10 years. Help!

I second the motion to at least add auto-renew on my domains! Great request QD!
I'd love something like this, as well.
If time is an issue and only a small tweak had to be made that was fast and dirty, though, it'd be a direct link to the Domain/DNS management page from within the admin sidebar (e.g. "Hosting > Domain Management").
Right now you have to click 4 times (Hosting > Cloud Servers > [Click Cloud Server Name] > DNS tab. That's way too many clicks for a part of the UI that's used a lot (subdomain creation, mx record management, new domain management, etc).
Please, please, please make this better!
Please, please, please do something like this. Managing domain name is an utter nightmare with Rackspace cloud sites right now.
I love the mock-up and the only other thing I would add is maybe a batch way to renew domain names; for example, have a checkbox by each domain, allow me to select multiple domains and renew them in one click event.
I normally sit down and renew all the domain names that expire next month, at the same time. Right now, I have to wait about 3 to 5 minutes in between each renewal because if I renew them too close together, an error is returned that says that the credit card processor returns a "duplicate charge" error. If I could choose multiple sites and renew them all at once, then I could have one charge sent to my credit card and not have to waste so much time doing this.

Please add this. I'm concerned that a domain will expire simply because we didn't notice. There's nowhere in the entire control panel that tells you when it expires, besides clicking on the Whois link.

I'm desperate for this too! Even just the option to have domains renew automatically would save me loads of time, and that of the tech support people I have to hassle each time
